Child Labor/Retiring at 30
As the United States industrialized, factories hired children to do a variety of things. Many families in mill towns depended on these children to make enough money for necessities. Today, child labor laws limit children under 14 from working at all and place limitations on how many hours young teenagers can work. But, we aren't in the industrial age any more. Child labor looks a lot different. I don't even know if you would consider it labor.
I was reading an article the other day about a 14-year old boy set to make $60,000 profit from his online business this year. Another 16-year old boy set the record for being the youngest e-sports gamer to rake in over $1 million. And there are a lot more examples like these. This is no easy feat. These kids are busting their humps, but they are being heavily rewarded.
We have moved beyond the industrial age. For the most part, we don't have to worry about kids working in sweat shops. Is it crazy to think that a kid can develop an online business, an app, play e-sports, or be a YouTube star and make more money by the time they are thirty than their parents could amass in their entire careers? I don't think so.
What if a child making this sort of money invested it wisely? Could you imagine being able to retire at 30? What would you do? Whatever your heart desired. The world is your oyster.
Just shooting spitballs.
